RAILWAY STATION, LUGANO / An atrium that creates a new connection between Lugano's railway station and the urban fabric: a real portal that connects travellers arriving and departing with the rest of the city, via the renovated city funicular and the pedestrian paths towards the Bertaccio Park below and the western part of the city above.
The icon of this project, which adapts this important urban junction to the increase in passenger flows and rationalizes the paths, is the large 1,600 square meters canopy suspended above the underground atrium.
The thin, airy roof creates a wall-free atrium. You can admire a glimpse of the lake from the train window, in the spirit of the definition Terrace on the Ticino, which gives its name to the entire redevelopment project and which also includes a long balcony called Belvedere overlooking the whole of the Gulf of Lugano.
Protected by the roof, the atrium is lowered to the level of the main subway, which connects the two parts of the city divided by the station, and through which you can access the ramps leading to the station platforms. The project has transformed the atrium space from an anonymous passageway into a united space that allows easy, safe and pleasant circulation of people using the station. An open space, a square, open yet deeply defined and structured. The underground watertight structure has been built with a 2,700 m² Drytech Tank.
