SANT'AMBROGIO SQUARE CAR PARK, MILAN / In Sant’Ambrogio square, Milan, a five-storey underground car park was built by the constructor Borio Mangiarotti S.p.A.
Drytech designed the diaphragm waterproofing system based on injectable Waterstop Tapes. This Drytech patent is a development of the classic waterstop tape, fitted with pre-drilled tubes allowing maintenance of the joint with ex-post resin injections carried out against any infiltrations.
The Drytech tape is laid with a special sheet pile which acts as the diaphragm’s partition formwork. The car park diaphragm, which flanks the Milanese basilica, goes down 22.70 metres in depth and laying of a sheet pile of this size required extra care by the building constructor’s technicians to ensure the joints were perfectly aligned. Perpendicularity is necessary for correct separation of the sheet pile from the tape, once the latter has been incorporated into the partition’s concrete. When casting has been completed the sheet pile is extracted, fitted with a new tape and repositioned for casting of the following partition.
The pre-drilled tubes are then joined to the connection boxes placed in the capping beam, which will then be accessible from inside the car park.
It will be possible to inject DRYflex elastic foam resin via these openings in response to any leaks from a joint. The injection will seal up the whole width of the joint through pressure. The practicality of the waterstop tape is there combined with the possibility of carrying out maintenance on the diaphragm at any time by working from inside the structure, without excavation or demolition and, above all, without needing to close the car park.
