OTAF FOUNDATION, SORENGO / Casa Cora and Casa Fomelino are two new buildings for the OTAF Foundation, Ticino childhood care organization (l’Opera Ticinese Assistenza alla Fanciullezza) founded in 1917 by Arnoldo Bettelini.

Designed by the architect Mario Botta, the two buildings, even if they differ in size and use – as well as being separated by a road -, establish a solid architectural relationship due to the coherence of materials and styles. In particular, the two opposing facades are characterised by a convessione which creates an intense effect of perspective.

Casa Cora has been built with 6 floors and has a clear functional layout: the lower ground floor has storage and utility rooms and common areas; the ground floor contains two nursery school groups; the next two floors are dedicated to classes for the special needs school; the third and fourth floors are residential spaces.

On the other side of the road, Casa Fomelino has been built on 3 floors: the lower ground floor is for parking, storage and changing rooms; the ground floor is occupied entirely by the woodwork studio covering an area of 400 m²; the first floor has multi-purpose rooms for the activities of the whole OTAF centre (conferences, parties, events, training courses etc.)

The different levels are reached independently from the outside since the construction follows the slope of the ground. The woodwork studio has existed since 1984 and activities range from the creation of handmade objects (toys, cutting boards, trophies for sporting events etc.), the construction of large wooden items (customized furniture, display stands etc.) to the restoration of antique furniture.

The two buildings are connected by a pedestrian underpass, built using the Drytech White Tank System. In total, Drytech created 3,560 m² of waterproof structure, collaborating with the structural engineer, Alfio Casanova, and the building contractor, Lepori, both from Lugano.
